“There were three common ways of getting out of the hood: getting killed, going to prison, or being able to afford your way out. By 18, we were over being broke, being harassed by the cops, the gang fights—all of it. None of us were suicidal, so dying was definitely the least appealing option. And none of us were exactly eager to go to prison either, so we decided affording our way out was the best option.

We started with petty theft and grand theft auto as a way to stack up cash, but it was barely enough to get by. We needed bigger, faster money. Eventually, we figured our salvation could be found in those neat, banded stacks of cash sitting in the bank. We just had to go in and take it.”
